Dear Journal,
Today my daughter, Hannah turned sixteen! I can hardly believe how fast time flew by. I’ve been trying hard to be a good mom for her especially now that she has entered high school and the dating world. I look back on my journals from that time of my own life, and it reminds me of how hard those years were. She’s a strong girl though, even stronger than I was; she will do well.
Rob is 14 as of last January. He is a strong-willed and rebellious child, but his heart is good. He reminds me so much of his father, getting taller by the day. He has his same bright blue eyes and dark brown hair too. He will have girls chasing after him like crazy in high school. I hope he stays the good boy I know him to be.
My 12 year old, Leo is very different from his brother. He has dark blonde hair like me. He is also the perfect little gentlemen. He’s sensitive to others’ feelings and a total romantic. He’s quiet though and rather shy. I worry about him getting picked on in school.
Sean, my 10 year old, idolizes Robert. He is constantly pestering to be allowed to follow him around. Rob is patient with him, but doesn’t like it. Unlike Rob though, Sean absolutely loves sports. He recently won an award playing soccer.
My youngest, Luke, turns 8 this year. He is so excited for his baptism and has busily been memorizing his Articles of Faith in preparation. He’s growing up to be a really great kid. I’m glad he is my youngest.
I love my kids. looking back I know I never expected to enjoy being a mom as much as I do. I just hope I’m doing okay with them.
Beyond raising my kids, I have my charming husband, and an exciting career. My husband treats me so well; I hardly deserve to have him. He still leaves sticky-notes with “I love you”s on my mirror before he goes to work and he takes me out to dinner every weekend. We were married 17 years ago on March 20th of 2013. He took me to Europe, just the two of us, for our anniversary this year. He knows how much I love to see the art and architecture there. Sometimes, after the kids are asleep he takes me down to the park and we swing for awhile. I hope we are always as happy as we are now. Both my husband and I work in technology. I am an aerospace engineer designing planes and he is a Disney imagineer, designing the latest roller coasters. This being so, we are very well off. I am extremely grateful for it too. This is especially so when emergencies occur, like when Sean broke his arm last summer and we had to pay for all of the doctors and hospital.
My niece, Rebekah has recently announced that she is pregnant. This will be her third child. I still remember holding her in my arms when I was ten. It’s crazy to think she will be turning 27 this July. Her husband reminds me a lot of a few of my best friends back in high school. He is so good to her. Peter and his wife just had their second child a few months ago and Carolyn is engaged to be married this summer. Eric gets home from his mission next year as well. When I talk to my sister Christine, we both can hardly believe how very fast the past twenty years have gone by. Beyond her kids, both Amanda and Rachel are married now, Rachel pregnant with her first. I am happy to say that all of these sweet nieces and nephews of mine were married in the LDS temples. Chip and Treasa are both off to prestigious east coast colleges. Gabriel and Austen both got home from their missions just this last year. All of the rest of my sweet nieces and nephews, if old enough, are heading off towards colleges and missions. Those not old enough are having great high school, Middle school, and elementary school experiences. We all get together as often as we can, with my husband’s family as well.
My family has recently moved into my dream house. It’s a two story house with a full basement. The entire basement is utilized as a teenage hang out. We have a large television hooked up to several video game units. There is a swing-set and trampoline in our backyard, and plenty of room for our German Shepherds to run. We live in a good neighborhood, all of our neighbors being of the same religion as us and very friendly towards each other. My kids go to the nearby schools, known to be some of the best schools in the state of Utah. I want them to get the best education available to them.
Things are good, and I am very happy here. Yes, things get rough at times, jobs have been lost, arguments do occur, and my home often ends up in chaos, but at the end of the day, I almost always go to sleep with a smile on my face. I wouldn’t trade a day in my life for anything in this world.
